Budget & Costs

Pre-trek Preparation Costs

Trek Costs

Total Costs $ variable

Costs will vary based on your route taken, length of trek and trekking company chosen. Costs will vary with the amount of clothes, kit and equipment you own and what you need to buy or rent. With that said, I will list individual costs of main things then you can investigate what you may not yet own.

Vaccinations $ 100

You may have to pay privately for the inoculations described in the vaccinations section.

Travel Insurance

While the trek company fee covers evacuation from the park, you should ensure you have medical cover and normal travel cover in case you end up with something seriously wrong. For EBC I used www.worldnomads.com but never needed to use them. Most of my group used them. Shop around or use your own insurance if you already have it from your bank cards.

Flights $ variable

Obviously this will vary depending on where you live. eg from UK circa $ 800 or Middle East circa $600. It’s almost certain you’won’t get a direct flight so be prepared for at least one, if not two changes. Seems like most flights change in Nairobi (Kenya) and then an hour to Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania.

Travel Insurance $ 150

Shop around. Remember that most insurance companies may not cover pre-existing medical conditions.

Spending Money $ 200

You may need to buy snacks, water, meals or gifts en route, while at hotel or on the way back.

Trekking Company $1,769

You will pay approximately $500 per person to book the trek. Decide on your best time to go. The balance can be paid in currency when you arrive and if like in Nepal, this will save you paying local tax. The cost of the trek will normally include:

  • cost of guide & porters
  • camping
  • all food on trek
  • evacuation insurance
  • airport pick up
  • airport drop off
  • arrival hotel
  • departure hotel
  • leaving dinner

Porter & Guides Tips $250

This is a minimum requested but more maybe given at your discretion. I paid my guide on EBC $120 extra as he got me back from EBC to Gorak Shep in the dark when I had AMS symptoms.
